Sergeant Murayama. A Japanese war diary, translated by Robert D. Thornton, Department of English, University of Colorado. Typescript: v. 16 pp. A front-line diary, December 19, 1942-January 8, 1943. Oka Battalion, Nagao Co., Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. Sergeant Murayama's diary opens on December 19, 1942 on Guadalcanal, where he had been for nearly five months. Murayama's last entry was dated January 8th, the date of the end of organized Japanese resistance on Guadalcanal. The diary includes poems as marginalia.

Dr. Robert D. Thornton graduated from the US Navy Japanese Language School, University of Colorado, Boulder. He served as a Japanese language officer for the US Navy at Pearl Harbor, Guam, and Okinawa. Following the war, Thornton taught English at Harvard, the University of Colorado, Boulder, and other universities. From the description of Robert D.
